The Amazing World of Butterflies

A Presentation by Dr. Nipam H. Patel, Director Marine Biological Laboratory

BREWSTER, MA — Learn how butterflies use their beauty to fool predators in a special presentation at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History by a global expert in evolutionary biology on Saturday, September 5 at 1pm.

Dr. Nipam H. Patel will launch the Museum’s Migration Season of programs with a talk exploring how the colors and patterns of butterflies help them survive, provide the ability to find mates, hide when necessary, and deter predators.

“For many butterflies and moths, there are aspects of their lives that are fascinating but not very visible to us,” said Dr. Patel. “For example, some butterflies are entirely dependent on ants to complete their life cycles. I’m excited to bring the latest research to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, which has been a strong ambassador for these amazing insects, and reveal secrets we’re only just beginning to understand.”

Dr. Patel is director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole and a lifelong butterfly enthusiast with an enormous personal collection, part of which will be on display at the talk. He is a leading scholar in modern evolutionary and developmental biology with a specific focus on the evolution of body patterning and segmentation, regeneration of the germline (cells carrying the genetic material passed from one generation to another) and structural coloration.

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History has a long association with Butterflies. Its Butterfly House, founded in 2016, welcomes around 9,000 visitors every year to see species including monarchs and giant swallowtails (the largest butterfly species in north America). The Museum also has a substantial research collection of butterflies.

Dr. Stephen Uzzo, Executive Director for the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History said: “Our Butterfly House is renowned as a ‘must go’ destination on the Cape, and the best place to see and learn about the species up close. We’re delighted to give visitors access to one of the world’s best experts on butterflies, providing an unrivalled opportunity for them to learn even more.”

Migration Season is a curated series of presentations themed around the annual movement of the species that come through seasonally or call Cape Cod their home. Upcoming events include the latest research on the Herring Run, demonstrations of the Museum’s Bird Banding team on Wing Island, and a talk on local osprey, including highlights from the Museum’s own Osprey Cam. The Amazing World of Butterflies presentation will be held at Cape Cod Museum of Natural History on Saturday, September 5 at 1pm. Tickets are available at ccmnh.org: $25 for Museum Members / $30 for Non-members.
