Joint Base Cape Cod Scientist Will Delve Into Coastal Pine Barrens Ecosystem

The Upper Cape lies within the southeastern Massachusetts coastal pine barrens, a landscape that is integral to the region's natural heritage and community identity, although residents often have little appreciation of its environmental significance.

The 300 Committee Land Trust of Falmouth will host a free lecture on Wednesday, May 6, at 7 PM, at Falmouth Academy, where conservation biologist Jake McCumber will delve into this ecosystem's fascinating flora and fauna. Then on Saturday, May 9, from noon to 2 PM, McCumber will lead a walk through the pine barrens of the Crane Wildlife Management Area in Falmouth.

McCumber, who works for the Massachusetts Army National Guard, leads a team of resource managers and scientists based at Camp Edwards whose work includes the collection of three decades of data showing the benefits of prescribed burning and other management techniques for birds, moths, and rare plants of coastal pine barrens.

The May 9 pine barrens walk at Crane Wildlife Management Area is capped at 20 attendees, and registration is required. Please register by emailing Jake McCumber at jakemccumber at gmail.com<mailto:jakemccumber at gmail.com>. Parking for the walk is at 1409 Sandwich Road. Heavy rain will cancel the event.
