Event: Play: “Painting Churches”, by Tina Howe Place: The Woods Hole Public Library Dates: Friday and Saturday, April 23 & 24, 30 & May 1, 7:30 Tickets are $15, available at the Library, The Woods Hole Public Library, which is about to celebrate its centennial, announces an exciting Theater benefit of Tina Howe’s award-winning play, “Painting Churches”,featuring Woods Hole residents Phyllis Goldstein, Michael Toner, and Lydia Sargent, with directorial assistance from Muriel Gould. Performances are Friday and Saturday, April 23 & 24, and April 30 & May 1 at 7:30 at the Woods Hole Library. Tickets are $15, available at the Library. 

First produced in 1983, “Painting Churches” is about Gardner and Fanny Church as seen through the eyes of their artist daughter who has returned to their home in Boston to paint her parents’ portrait. Gardner, an eminent New England poet, and Fanny, his well-born, eccentric wife, are packing up their belongings, selling their large home in Louisburg Square, and retiring to a small cottage in Cotuit on Cape Cod. The drama unfolds as Mags tries to get her uncooperative parents to pose amidst the distractions of packing up and intermittently throwing out a lifetime of possessions as well as the manuscript Gardner has been working on. In “Painting Churches”, Howe, captures the vivid, lyrical, often hysterically funny, portrait of a family. Performers Goldstein, Toner, and Sargent are veterans of the Woods Hole community, on-stage and off. Their last production was “Pinteresque”, a program of one-act plays by Harold Pinter, produced with much acclaim for the Woods Hole Women’s Club this winter.
