Woods Hole, MA –
The Solstice Singers will celebrate their 25th anniversary with
“Solstice Light”, a vibrant performance featuring choral pieces ranging
from the ethereal O Magnum Mysterium (by Tomàs Luis de Victoria) to
familiar carols, wassailing songs, and the Boar’s Head Carol. A daring
sword dance, a mummers’ play and an elegant English country dance will
enliven the show, which takes place in the historic Woods Hole Community
Hall, richly decorated for the event.
The Solstice Singers will be joined by members of the early music group
Ensemble Passacaglia, playing period instruments including recorder,
viola da gamba and percussion. The show also features the children’s
chorus Les Enfants du Soleil, singing seasonal favorites and raising
their sweet voices to wish you all the best in this season of returning
light. The performers are costumed in an array of Renaissance- and
Medieval-style finery to complete the setting for a magical evening of
tradition and celebration.
The Solstice Singers was formed in 1992 under the guidance of the late
Patricia C. Brown, and has been directed by Lore Loftfield DeBower of
Woods Hole since 2002. The group is a Cape Cod nonprofit organization
dedicated to promoting the
arts throughout the Cape and beyond, whose primary mission is to provide
community enrichment by sharing music and tradition of earlier times.
Current members come from the Upper Cape and Southeastern Massachusetts,
and nearly half of the adult members have been with the group since its
inception.
The Solstice Singers children’s chorus, Les Enfants du Soleil, was
started as a way to include the children of adult singers in the musical
fun, and has continued to enrich the programs over the years. This year
seven delightful young singers, ages 6 to 11, will perform traditional
favorites and join the adults in several numbers, as well as presenting
a dramatic rendering of a favorite folk tale and playing a key role in
the mummers’ play.
Ensemble Passacaglia has enriched the Solstice Singers performances for
many years, playing lively instrumental pieces and accompanying the
singers on authentic early instruments. The ensemble includes Jan
Elliott of Woods Hole on recorder and other renaissance winds, Molly
Johnston of Falmouth on viola da gamba, and Lisa Esperson of Falmouth on
a variety of percussion instruments.
The Vineyard Swordfish dance team will make a special guest appearance
at the Solstice Singers’ 25th anniversary celebration, bringing the
drama of traditional English sword dance to the show. The team is led by
Jan Elliott and includes several members of the Solstice Singers who
will swap their costumes for dance ‘kit’ to perform “Woods’le,” a dance
created by the team in 2015. Live dance music will be provided on hurdy
gurdy, fiddle, mandolin and drum.
The Solstice Singers performances will be held in the Woods Hole
Community Hall at 68 Water Street on Saturday Dec. 16 (4:00 pm) and
Sunday Dec. 17 (4:00 pm). The hall is accessible to people with
disabilities. Advance tickets are available at Eight Cousins Bookstore
in Falmouth or online at http://mktix.com/tss. Admission: $20 at the
door, $17 in advance; $12 students; $1 children under 12. For more
