New Canal Bridges & the Cape’s 21st Century Transportation System

Replacement of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges is essential to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transportation for residents, workers, visitors, goods, and services, both on and off the Cape. Just like the existing spans did during the 20th century, new bridges could have transformational impacts on traffic, growth, and the environment in the decades ahead—and across the entire Cape & Islands region. The public comment period on the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the new bridges concludes on October 24th.

Sierra Club supports bridge replacement but is concerned about the limited scope of the DEIR’s traffic and socioeconomic impact studies, especially in light of the Cape Cod Commission’s decision not to review the project as a development of regional impact. To inform public comment by Sierra Club and interested individuals, this "Third Tuesday Talk" will feature a panel discussion addressing potential Cape-wide impacts and mitigation options, including pathways toward a 21st century transportation system not centered around personal automobiles and commercial vehicles crossing the canal.

Our October 21st panel includes the following participants:

Ron Bergstrom, Barnstable County Commissioner

Michael Herman, member, Orleans Select Board

Hadley Luddy, State Representative, 4th Barnstable District

Clay Schofield, transportation engineer/planner (retired)

Steve Tupper, deputy director, Cape Cod Commission

Attendees will have the opportunity to join the discussion. In addition, guidance for submitting public comments on the DEIR will be provided.

Best,

Chris Powicki
